It\u2019s incredibly popular among locals, and I seldom go here without seeing at least one friend coming in from a surf or sunning themselves.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Surf, sun and swims are the main draw of this beach \u2014 it\u2019s very beachy in that sense. But if you\u2019re looking for more details, I\u2019ve covered everything you need to know below!<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get to Muizenberg beach<\/h2>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re going for a surf or some cold water exposure, we recommend going as early as possible, and ideally during the week. This is because on weekends during summer (and spring and autumn, to a lesser extent) <a href=\"https:\/\/wandercapetown.com\/neighbourhood-guide\/muizenberg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Muizenberg<\/a> gets <em>packed<\/em>. This area is a lot busier, with car guards, security guards, and plenty of people who keep an eye out. The Muizenberg Beach Huts, also known as beach boxes, are a space for beachgoers to get changed into swimsuits and wetsuits. But if you\u2019ve heard of its glory and little else, this is why Capetonians love it:<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Go swimming<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Yes indeedy, you can go swimming at Muizenberg! The water is a good bit warmer than on the other side of town (think the Cliftons and Camps Bay), so you won\u2019t feel like you\u2019re braving arctic conditions just to get a dip in. There are also no nearby rocks or heavy currents here, so it\u2019s a good, safe option for everyone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>There are sometimes <a href=\"https:\/\/capetownfreediving.com\/bluebottle-jellyfish\/\">bluebottles<\/a> (which really sting if their tentacles catch you), so keep an eye out on the sand \u2014 if they\u2019re in the water, they\u2019ll also be washed up on the beach.\u00a0<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>You also need to watch out for surfers! Because the conditions in Muizenberg are so excellent for surfing, you\u2019ll sometimes have folks catching waves really close to you. Its waves are long and unbroken, the conditions are regularly impeccable, and, same as for swimmers, surfers really benefit from the lack of rocks and strong currents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>There are many board rental spots right next to the beach, at the aptly named Surfers Corner. You can just keep walking \u2014 it\u2019s so fantastically long \u2014 and there will always be other dogs here to play with. That is, always within dog-allowed times. <strong>During the summer months, dogs are only allowed till 9am and again after 6pm<\/strong>. We dog people tend to get a bit grumpy about this restriction, but it&#8217;s because the beach can get really packed, and dogs can wreak some havoc.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Even with this limitation, it\u2019s a wonderful place to bring the pups. They get some experience with water, there are regular bins for poops, and lots of socialisation. Do note, though, that many dogs like to eat the old kelp and other washed-up things. Most have a surfers\u2019 breakfast of some sort (always warm and carby, just what you want when you get out of the water!) but all have really great coffee and food.\u00a0<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>I strongly recommend supporting one of the local spots rather than chains like Spur and Starbucks when you\u2019re here. The coffee is higher quality and it\u2019s so much better for the local economy \u2014 you get to do some good while you\u2019re just enjoying yourself! Some of my top recommendations are:<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:list -->\n<ul><!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li><strong>Hang Ten Cafe <\/strong>\u2014 absolutely delicious vegan treats (I\u2019m not vegan but I adore these) and unique dishes like kelp lasagne<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item --><!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li><strong>Empire Cafe<\/strong> \u2014 their pastel de nata are as good as any I had in Portugal, and they\u2019ve got some amazing, creative dishes; I particularly love the r\u00f6sti and the bacon purses<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item --><!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li><strong>The Commons <\/strong>\u2014 also some excellent vegan and vegetarian dishes, and the best view in Muizenberg<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/ul>\n<!-- \/wp:list --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thecommons.co.za\/\">The Commons<\/a> is also a fantastic place to check out in the evening. They\u2019re the hub of Muizenberg, with weekly live gigs and DJ sets, a great atmosphere, and regular events like chess nights and poetry jams. They\u2019ve also got a beautiful studio with yoga, pilates, improv, and other classes and workshops.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Two cafes that <em>are <\/em>chains, but South African ones and actually really lekker, are <em>Knead<\/em> and <em>Hans and Lloyd<\/em>. If the smaller spots are packed or you like the look of these, they\u2019re good options!<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We love Muizenberg Beach<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>So, that\u2019s your local\u2019s guide to Muizenberg Beach. It\u2019s a wonderful place to pop in for a surf or swim, or to spend the whole day. And while there\u2019s less to do in winter, that\u2019s the best time for surfing and it stays just as beautiful!<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>If you\u2019re planning on staying here while in Cape Town, I think that\u2019s a terrific choice but want to note that it\u2019s quite far from the <a href=\"https:\/\/wandercapetown.com\/neighbourhood-guide\/city-center-cape-town\/\">city centre<\/a>, and that there\u2019s a lot of traffic if you try to travel at peak hours. A short visit to Cape Town might be better served by a stay in <a href=\"https:\/\/wandercapetown.com\/neighbourhood-guide\/sea-point\/\">Sea Point<\/a>, coastal but central.
